Cycling Routes Safe for Families and Beginners Open Across Seoul Parks
New marked paths and rental expansions target beginners and parents with young children this summer.
How we reported this
Seoul city crews finished marking 18 kilometres of new protected bike lanes in Yeouido and Ttukseom last week, giving families and first-time riders direct access to flat riverside paths without crossing major roads.
The upgrades arrive as more residents seek outdoor activity during the July heat. City health data shows adult participation in regular exercise rose 12 percent between 2023 and 2025, with cycling cited as the fastest-growing option for households with children under 12. Officials say the new lanes reduce the main barrier reported in earlier surveys: fear of traffic.
Two routes ready now
Yeouido Hangang Park offers the longest continuous stretch, starting at the Yeouinaru ferry terminal and running west to Seonyudo Island. The surface is smooth asphalt, and red-and-white barriers separate bikes from the pedestrian walkway. Families can stop at the playground near the 63 Building or rent a tandem at the Ddareungi station beside the National Assembly building. Ttukseom Hangang Park provides a shorter 6-kilometre loop that begins at the Ttukseom station exit 1 and circles the soccer fields and water park. Both sites added extra shade sails and drinking fountains this month.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government’s bicycle program recorded 4.2 million Ddareungi rentals in 2025, up from 3.1 million the year before. A standard bike costs 1,000 won for the first hour and 500 won for each additional 30 minutes. Helmets are available free at 14 staffed stations along the Han River, including the two new locations in Yeouido and Ttukseom. Parents can also reserve child seats and tag-along trailers through the same app with 24-hour notice.
Getting started this weekend
Riders should download the Ddareungi app before arrival and choose the “family” filter to see only routes rated easy. Morning temperatures before 10 a.m. stay under 28 degrees, making that the best window for beginners. City staff recommend starting at Yeouido, riding 3 kilometres, then turning back, rather than attempting the full distance on the first outing. First-aid kits and basic repair stands sit every 2 kilometres. Anyone unsure about balance or distance should check with a local clinic before renting, especially during the current heat advisory.
