The timing matters. Cognitive arousal compounds the light issue. Scrolling social media, whether that's Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, or the short-form content dominant on Korean platform Kakao TV, keeps the prefrontal cortex active in a way that reading a physical book does not. The brain is problem-solving, comparing, reacting. That neural activity delays sleep onset independent of light exposure. The two mechanisms stack.
Where Seoul Is Trying to Intervene
The Seoul Metropolitan Government launched its Digital Detox Campaign in March 2026, distributed through community health centres in 25 administrative districts. The program recommends a hard screen cutoff at 10 p.m., paired with a 20-minute outdoor walk, designed around the city's extensive trail network, including Bugaksan and the Cheonggyecheon stream path through Jongno-gu. Participation numbers for the first quarter reached 41,000 registered households, though compliance tracking beyond self-reporting remains limited.
Separately, the Korean Sleep Society, headquartered in Seocho-gu, has been running public education seminars at community libraries since 2024. Their Seoul National University Hospital-affiliated sleep clinic on Daehak-ro recorded a 28 percent increase in outpatient appointments through the first half of 2026, which clinicians there attribute partly to rising public awareness and partly to genuine worsening of sleep complaints post-pandemic.
Private sector options have multiplied too. Naps cafés, quiet, dark, 30-minute rest pods, have expanded from a handful of locations near Gangnam Station to more than 60 venues citywide as of June 2026, charging between 5,000 and 8,000 won per session. They treat the symptom, not the cause.
The practical floor here is straightforward: charge your phone outside the bedroom, drop screen brightness significantly after sunset, and treat the 60 minutes before sleep as protected time. That last point is the hard one in a city where group chats do not sleep.
